According to a report by Uzbekistan’s newspaper website on November 10, Sidikov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Uzbekistan National Oil and Gas Company, announced the discovery of a natural gas field with abnormally high pressure in the Muynak region of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. This marks another major energy discovery following the detection of the large ultra-deep gas field in the Ustyurt region.
Sidikov stated that Uzbekistan plans to independently develop this gas field without introducing foreign partners. In July 2025, during the drilling of the first exploration well designed to a depth of 5,000 meters, a natural gas leak occurred at a depth of 4,707 meters. The incident was effectively controlled after a month of proper disposal. Subsequent work has progressed smoothly: within just two months, the natural gas output reached 100 million cubic meters, with mining costs amounting to approximately 450 billion soums (around 3.7 million US dollars) and revenues hitting about 60 billion soums (roughly 4.93 million US dollars) over the same period. Drilling operations for four new wells have been launched to further assess the reserves and geological characteristics of the gas field.
Data from the UK Energy Institute shows that as of the end of 2024, Uzbekistan’s proven natural gas reserves stood at 19.7 trillion cubic meters, yet its output had dropped by nearly 25% compared with 2019. Against this backdrop, Uzbekistan is accelerating the development of renewable energy and expanding natural gas imports from Russia and Turkmenistan.
