Energy development by PetroChina and the coexistence of all things

发布日期:2026-05-31

On May 22, on the occasion of International

Biodiversity Day, PetroChina resented its biodiversity conservation achievements: it has established 12 OECMs (Own Contribution Managed Conservation Areas), a comprehensive biodiversity monitoring system, 9 green shared huts, and 11 volunteer service teams with a total of 197 members. It also released the "2025 Bird Observation Report of PetroChina's Own Contribution Managed Conservation Areas" and established 23,000 mu of carbon sink forests and carbon neutral forests, with a total green area of 369 million square meters. As the main force in biodiversity conservation and land greening in China, Changqing Oilfield has built over a thousand mu of Nanliang carbon sink forests on the loess plateau this year, protected rare plants such as the black gran in the sand sea, and attracted rare migratory birds such as the white-napped crane to wetlands. These landmark ecological achievements demonstrate the responsibility of a central enterprise and inject petroleum power into the harmonious coexistence of man and nature and the construction of a beautiful China.

On the loess plateau, barren mountains are being transformed into green barriers. Changqing Oilfield has proactively shouldered the ecological responsibility of a central enterprise, adhering to the principle of simultaneous planning and promotion of oilfield development and land greening. Over 160,000 trees, including spruces and Chinese pines, have been planted according to local conditions. In 2023, a "PetroChina Red Nanliang Forest" covering over a thousand acres was established to high standards. This green barrier has an annual carbon sequestration capacity exceeding 400 tons, making a positive contribution to the ecological construction of the loess plateau. In the past two years, Changqing Oilfield has continuously increased its ecological investment, adding over a thousand acres of carbon sink forests to the old area. The intensity of soil erosion in the region has decreased by 80%. The once barren mountains are now covered in lush greenery, becoming a landmark for energy and green, low-carbon development in the old area. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, Changqing Oilfield has constructed a total of 33 ecological forests, covering an area of over 7,000 acres.

On the banks of wetlands, migratory birds cast their ecological trust votes. When the ecology improves, everything responds. In March this year, the white-napped crane, a globally vulnerable species and a national first-class protected wild animal, appeared in groups for the first time in the self-contributing biodiversity conservation area of the Sunan-C3 section of the Sulige gas field, marking a significant achievement in the continuous improvement of China's petroleum ecology. Based on the sensitive characteristics of wetland ecology, Changqing Oilfield strictly implements the "one unchanged, four avoidances" principle, maintaining the original appearance of the habitat unchanged, avoiding well clusters, pipelines, construction, etc., promoting the intensive well spacing of large well clusters to reduce land occupation, and resolutely halting work during bird breeding periods to minimize disturbance. At the same time, it protects the food sources of birds, guides herdsmen to regulate grazing, and allows wild protected animals such as grey cranes and demoiselles to migrate, breed, and thrive here safely. Monitoring data shows that there are currently 81 species of birds in this conservation area, with 26 new species added compared to 2023.

Every mountain and forest nurtures life, every sand dune and marsh safeguards creatures. From the continuous greening and strengthening of ecological foundations in the Red South Beam, to the meticulous protection of rare black granular species in the Mu Us Sandy Land, to the wetland sanctuary welcoming rare migratory birds for feeding and roosting, these three ecological protection practices are vivid epitomes of PetroChina's deep commitment to biodiversity conservation and full dedication to building a beautiful China.
