China's hydrogen energy industry is moving towards the stage of 'large-scale development'

Recently, at the final of the 2025 Hydrogen Energy Specialized and Innovative Entrepreneurship Competition, the China Hydrogen Energy Alliance released the "China Hydrogen Energy Development Index Design and Evaluation" report (hereinafter referred to as the "Industry Development Index"), which pointed out that in 2025, with the acceleration of hydrogen energy infrastructure construction and the continuous consolidation of industrial development foundation, various dimensions of China's hydrogen energy industry index are expected to maintain growth momentum.

In recent years, guided by the "Medium - and Long Term Plan for the Development of the Hydrogen Energy Industry (2021-2035)", China has systematically promoted the construction of the entire hydrogen energy industry chain, continuously made efforts in the cultivation of innovation systems, infrastructure layout, expansion of application scenarios, and improvement of policy systems, and has initially built a relatively complete hydrogen energy industry system.

Xu Ziming, Director of the Energy Efficiency and Storage Department of the Science and Technology Equipment Department of the National Energy Administration, stated that developing the hydrogen energy industry is a strategic choice for achieving energy structure transformation and green development. Next, we need to continuously consolidate the foundation of hydrogen energy industry development, strengthen policy guidance to promote healthy and orderly development of the industry, enhance basic research to improve key core technology levels, strengthen pilot promotion to promote diversified industrialization in an orderly manner, and enhance cooperation and exchange to empower high-quality development of the industrial chain.

According to relevant data evaluation, the national hydrogen energy industry development index will climb from 63.19 to 73.68 from 2021 to 2024. According to relevant classification standards, China's hydrogen energy industry as a whole has gradually moved from a low level of development to a medium level of development, and is moving from the "pilot demonstration" stage to the "scale development" stage, with balanced and mutually promoting development in all dimensions. From a regional perspective, North China and Northwest China jointly lead the development of China's hydrogen energy industry with scores higher than the national comprehensive score; Other regions, based on their own resource endowments and geographical advantages, actively explore differentiated and diversified development paths.
