The National Petroleum Corporation has been transferred to the newly established Ministry of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Environment

The government has established a new government structure through formal national laws and made significant adjustments to various departments. The core reform is to establish the Ministry of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Environment, which will centrally manage policy formulation, regulation and regulatory construction in the emerging petroleum field. Effective immediately, institutions such as the National Petroleum Corporation will be directly under this department and will no longer be under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Subsequent responsibilities of the Ministry of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Environment: In the future, some of the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Natural Resources will focus on water resource management, energy supply, and natural resources other than oil and gas. Suriname Energy Company remains under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Suriname Water Company is also under the management of this department, under the responsibility of David Abiamofo. According to national laws and legislative instructions, the restructuring of multiple departments is part of a broader administrative restructuring. Several department names are changed, while other departments are merged or reorganized by function to optimize policy coordination. This reform aims to avoid functional overlap and focus policy on strategic pillars such as energy, economy, digital transformation, and social inclusion.

The newly established Ministry of Oil, Gas and Environment, led by Patrick Brunings, is responsible for national oil spill emergency plans, local content regulations, and environmental and climate commitment policies to ensure a balance between economic growth and ecological security. According to National Law No. 124 of 2025, the new structure will take effect retrospectively from July 16, 2025.
