China's large-capacity green energy storage technology achieves a significant breakthrough

China has achieved a significant breakthrough in large-capacity green energy storage technology. On the 4th, reporters learned from the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the institute, in collaboration with China Energy Storage (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd., has successfully developed the world's first compressed air energy storage compressor with the highest single-unit power. Currently, the compressor has passed third-party testing, with multiple performance indicators reaching leading levels.

Compressed air energy storage is a large-scale energy storage technology, which can be generally understood as a giant "air battery". During off-peak hours, it compresses air using electrical energy and stores it; during peak hours, it releases high-pressure air to drive generators to generate electricity, which is of great significance for grid regulation and new energy consumption. The compressor is the core component of the compressed air energy storage system.

"The compressor developed this time has set a new record with a single-unit power exceeding 100 megawatts (MW), which is more than doubled compared to similar equipment in the past. During testing, its maximum exhaust pressure reached 10.1 MPa, with a wide range of adaptability to varying operating conditions. Especially, its operating efficiency at the maximum pressure was as high as 88.1%. It possesses significant advantages such as high efficiency, high pressure, and wide operating range," said Zuo Zhitao, the head of compressor research and development at the Energy Storage Research and Development Center of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zuo Zhitao stated that the successful development of this ultra-large compressed air energy storage compressor, which possesses completely independent intellectual property rights, marks a significant milestone in this technological field. It will vigorously propel China's compressed air energy storage technology towards larger-scale and more efficient commercial applications, providing crucial technical support for the construction of new power systems and the green transformation of energy.
